Case Study - Top Class Shipping Container Conversion Classroom.

Shipping container conversion classroom utilising natural light and creating an inspiring and fun learning environment which is sustainable and durable.

They say, ‘Every day’s a school day’. This was true recently for our Conversions Team when they were asked by a customer to create a classroom from converted shipping containers for a primary school in Somerset. All our container conversions are bespoke and we tailor the size to suit the space available. There are a wide number of window and door options plus different interiors and exterior claddings to best match your specifications. After you have read this case study there is an enquiry form, please send us the details of your project and our conversion team will arrange a quote.

The Brief - Container Conversion Classroom

The school outlined that the shipping container conversion classroom would be located away from the main school building, adjacent to their playground, picnic area and playing field. The main criteria discussed by the school was their wish to have as much natural light as possible filling the classroom and to have the whole unit open plan to maximise as much space as possible.

The classroom would have a dual purpose and be used for infants as a classroom and playroom. We were also asked to consider a few key factors including, making it easy for the pupils and teachers to access and utilise the outdoor space without having to go too far away from the building and that is was aesthetically pleasing outside and functional inside.

The Shipping Container Conversion Solution

With the ground space allocated for the project, the team at Eldapoint sourced two 20ft High Cube used shipping containers for the build. Our shipping container conversions team removed one side from each container and fitted a linking unit. The other side of one of the units was fitted with a vision panel almost the full length and height of the side which filled the room with light and gave the effect of even more space.

Feeling connected to the outdoor area around the classroom was high on the wish list, so the team at Eldapoint fitted French doors at one end of the unit to allow pupils and teachers to easily access the playground, park and picnic area through the double opening doors. The exterior was beautifully clad with tongue and grove tantalised timber, giving a professional and high-end finish.

The interior fit-out was built with easy-clean white melamine boards covering the walls, and the floor was finished with non-slip flooring for safety. To ensure the conversion could be utilised all your round, electric heating, power supply and lighting were also fitted into the container classroom.

The Project Outcome and Feedback

The completed container conversion classroom is now in use and has been given a gold star by staff, parents and most importantly the pupils. The project has created a sustainable, cost-effective, spacious and safe environment in a short time frame which would have been difficult to match using traditional building methods. It was also felt that the use of alternative types of modular or temporary units would not have had the same ability to create the stunning finished project which is now a much-loved part of the school.

The client has subsequently seen a good number of enquiries from educational institutions who were impressed with our build and finish, and there are currently some discussions around similar projects.
