We’ve all seen an increase in the use of shipping containers for a variety of wild and wonderful uses. Many businesses are utilising them for a range of business ventures because they are versatile, cost-effective and easy to transport. But one question we get asked a lot is if planning permission is needed to use a shipping container. This blog will detail everything you need to know about planning permission related to shipping containers and what to do if you’re unsure about whether it’s needed.

Is a shipping container classed as a temporary structure?

A shipping container is typically considered to be a temporary structure, falling under the same category as a caravan or mobile home, meaning it is not intended for permanent use like a traditional building would be.

Do I need planning permission for a shipping container business?

This is where it gets slightly more complicated. The matter of whether or not you need planning permission for a shipping container business depends purely on the nature of the business (whether it is a temporary or permanent venture). A permanent shipping container business would need planning permission, however, if you are looking to set up a pop-up shop or temporary office then it is unlikely that you would need planning permission. Providing that you were not in any one location for more than 28 days. However, to add further complications, whether or not you need planning permission can depend on the area, for example, if the area is a national park guidelines will be stricter.

There are also several other circumstances in which you may not need to obtain planning permission such as if you have a sizeable plot of farmland or a private business premise. However, this will still depend on individual circumstances.

What should I do if I’m unsure about planning permission?

The specific rules and regulations for planning permission can differ throughout different areas of the UK, so If you are unsure about whether or not you need planning permission for your shipping container, it is always best to contact your local council or planning authority as they will be able to best advise you on your specific circumstances.
